CAPS: Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements

The Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) is not a new curriculum, but an amendment to the National Curriculum Statement Grades R – 12 Subject Statements.

It therefore still follows the requirements of the same process and procedure as the National Curriculum Statement Grades R – 12 (2002).

  • Each Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) is a streamlined, essential document necessary for teaching and learning in all subjects from Grade R to 12.
  • Each subject has one CAPS document that provides details of what needs to be taught and assessed on a grade-by-grade basis for each week of the school year.
  • The CAPS are more content-based than the previous OBE curriculum, prescribing specific content and describing when it needs to be taught.

The National Department of Basic Education has indicated that they will be calling for publishers to submit new books for screening, however no dates have been confirmed. They propose to select a single title per subject, per language for use in schools across the country.
