Business Logistics Management 3e
W. Pienaar, J. Vogt: Contributors: K. Cronje, P. Kilbourn, J. Louw, J. van Eeden, U. Kussing

Business Logistics Management: A Supply Chain Perspective third edition equips students to improve on efficiency and effectiveness in a business environment through planning and strategy. The new edition focuses on the quantitative aspect of logistics by including more exercises and calculations for students to practise. There will also be an even greater focus on supply chain management, which widens the scope of the textbook. This will allow the book to be used beyond the first year of study. There is also a greater focus on South African industry and additional case studies.

Features

  • Chapters include case studies relating to logistics issues South African students may deal with in the workplace. Reference is also made throughout to how logistics is practised in South Africa and SA legislation and SA industry examples are incorporated where relevant. Students therefore gain insight into the kind of issues they will have to deal with in South African industry.
  • Quantitative exercises to practise logistics calculations. This develops student’s technical and mathematical ability, one of the skills needed in the workplace.
  • Discussion questions and lists of additional resources at the end of each chapter; these test student’s knowledge and understanding of the theory discussed and provide the opportunity for further research.
Greater focus on quantitative aspects:
  • More quantitative exercises integrated into the chapters
  • Brand new chapter specifically focusing on quantitative aspects: Forecasting supply requirements
  • Expanded and updated appendix on calculations in Chapter 5 Financial aspects
  • Brand-new section on practical sales aspects incorporated into Chapter 2 Competitive advantage created by logistics.
  • Brand-new chapter 8 Production and operations management
  • Additional case study per chapter. The additional case study will be at a higher level (company level) and will appeal to MBA students as well as undergrads.
  • Restructured chapter 9 on Design
  • More theoretical chapters (e.g. Packaging) balanced by the inclusion of examples and illustrations
  • Revised strategy chapter. There will be a greater focus on logistics strategy as opposed to enterprise strategy as is relevant to the study of business logistics. This will involve a greater focus on planning.
