Oxford funds future leaders – in the name of Mandela

The Mandela Rhodes Foundation received a R3,5 million injection with a donation from Oxford University Press Southern Africa. The money will be used as seed capital to fund an additional scholarship in the name of Nelson Mandela, into perpetuity.

Vice Chancellor of Oxford University Dr John Hood stated at the handover ceremony that the donation represented Oxford’s commitment to the upliftment of learners and students through education.

The private event took place at Mandela House in Houghton, Johannesburg on 28 July 2006 , with Mr Mandela, the patron of the Foundation, receiving the significant cheque.

Oxford University Press Southern Africa’s Managing Director, Lieze Kotzé, said: “Oxford University Press publishes school and tertiary textbooks and dictionaries of high quality for the South African market and we are delighted to demonstrate our commitment to education in South Africa.”

“Our close ties with Oxford University – as well as the existing links between the Rhodes Trust and Oxford University – make The Mandela Rhodes Foundation the ideal organization to receive this support.”

As one of the three charities which bear Mr Mandela’s name, The Mandela Rhodes Foundation has a specific brief to build exceptional leadership capacity in Africa through its various programmes.

The programmes develop individual human skills across African society, with the aim of helping the continent achieve success and prosperity, and full and equal participation in the global world. The Mandela Rhodes Scholarships are the signature programme of the Foundation, and offer a unique educational opportunity to young Africans who exhibit academic prowess and broad leadership potential.
