OPEN BOOK FESTIVAL: FUN WITH OXFORD

Oxford University Press Southern Africa recently hosted various events at the newly launched Open Book Festival, at various venues in and around Cape Town.

Two of these were items on the Open Book Festival Youth Programme, in partnership with Equal Education:

At a special storytime session at St Agnes Primary School in Woodstock Cape Town on Friday 23 September, OUP read stories to 65 Grade 2 learners while Floppy the dog (children’s beloved character from the Oxford Reading Tree series), entertained everyone. Floppy flew all the way from Oxford especially to meet the children, in support of Open Book, and to encourage a love of books and reading amongst children.
Each lucky school learner received book hampers, activities and enjoyed eating snacks while hanging out with Floppy.

Across town, Oxford hosted the first WordPlay Wordathon at Masiyile Secondary School in Khayelitsha on Wednesday 21 September. The event saw 32 Grade 8 learners from the school competing against each other in a word-building marathon using the Oxford Word Play card game.
The game encourages learners to learn from and compete with one another by creating words with the letters they are dealt, while developing their vocabulary, spelling and dictionary skills. Nandipha Tembani took home first prize, consisting of a R300 stationery voucher, with Retabile Mdleleni taking the runner-up position and a R150 voucher.
All 32 participating learners received a copy of the Oxford South African School Dictionary. The school also received a new desktop computer for the school library, which will celebrate its first anniversary in November.

On the main program, OUP conducted two fascinating discussions with their expert authors and guests:
On Friday 23 September at the Townhouse Hotel, they hosted a panel discussion on how to start and run a business in South Africa. The panelists, experts in their fields, spoke about the topics covered in their books:

Barrie Terblanche (Co-Author of Starting Your Own Business in South Africa),
Walter Geach (Managing Editor of Companies and Other Business Structures in South Africa)
and Andrew Levy (Co-Editor of Labour Relations in South Africa)

Then on Saturday 24 September, in an interesting and informative presentation on the world of dictionaries, OUP enlightened book and language lovers about the fascinating process of putting dictionaries together, how new words are selected and old words dropped... amongst other things.
Special guest Rodney Trudgeon (Fine Music Radio) chatted to Dr Phillip Louw and Mr Fred Pheiffer from the Oxford Dictionary Publishing team.
